Now that it is fall and October, the harvest season is around the corner! This means that more farm machinery will be traveling on the roads. As a thank you to the hard-working farmers who help feed the world, the least we can do is show some kindness and keep them safe on the roadways.
Farm machinery is large and heavy, making it hard for the operator to speed up, slow down and stop. The machines make wide turns and sometimes have to cross over centerlines to do so. The equipment itself is also wider than typical cars and trucks and sometimes will take up two lanes. Also, be mindful that there are large blind spots for the operator, making it difficult to see approaching vehicles.
Safety tips for motorists:
- Be patient
- Stay focused and do not text and drive
- Keep your distance
- Pass with caution
- Do not pass if you can see oncoming traffic
- Do not pass in “no passing zones”
- Be extra cautious near fields because they might suddenly turn
Safety tips for farmers:
- Use proper lighting such as Slow Moving Vehicle (SMV) or Speed Identification Symbol (SIS) signs and stay visible during the day and night time
- Do not text and operate machinery
- Respect the flow of traffic
- Stay well rested
These safety tips can help save lives of both farmers and motorists and ensure that every trip on the roads is safe for everyone. Here is to a safe and productive 2023 harvest!
