Since 2014, Nationwide has sponsored Grain Bin Safety Week. This week is intended to provide awareness about the dangers of grain bins. Farming is one of the most dangerous jobs in the U.S. Every year, thousands of farm workers are injured or killed from farming accidents. Many of the injuries that occur happen to young people that may not be aware of the dangers and proper safety procedures.
This year Grain Bin Safety week is February 18-24. The annual campaign occurs during the third full week of February and it’s purpose is to bring awareness to the dangers of grain bins and the preventive actions that can be taken to avoid entrapments.
In the case that grain bin entrapment does occur your local fire department will likely be the first on the scene. Nationwide has teamed up with the National Education Center for Agriculture Safety, KC Supply, and others to award emergency first responders with grain rescue tubes and hands-on rescue training to help save lives.
In addition to educating growers and the people that work for them about grain bin safety Nationwide is taking nominations for local fire departments to win one grain rescue tube, valued between $3,000 to $5,000 and one six-hour grain entrapment rescue training session, at the winner’s location, valued at up to $5,000.
